Quiet Tones on a Journal Page

I have been nose to monitor for 3 weeks now as I have been learning web designing. This is not something I aspired to do. But the Ning system is failing me and the necessity to move our Graceful Artist site became evident. And, of course, the need arose just when it necessitated immediate action. So, with no time to spare, I've been learning a lot. But I am very proud of how lovely it looks. I hope you will pop over and take a look. This year I have focused more on working in an art journal than I have in the past. I've learned some ways to work around the need for paint and lots of elaborate supplies and have enjoyed expanding the thought of what my pencils can do on those pages.

But this week I enjoyed just a simple approach. I have a Strathmore toned sketch paper journal. I've not done much in it as the paper is so thin that it seems less than ideal. But the colors call to me! We had to be out of town the other day and had a block of time with no particular plan and not many options for filling that time. So, I took along my toned journal and my Derwent tinted charcoal. I took nothing else so I wouldn't be tempted to take another approach.

This drawing of Kenya was the result. The toned sketch paper is not the ideal texture for charcoal but it worked and I enjoyed the process. Now, if they would make some vellum bristol board in these toned colors, I would really be a happy girl!

I Have the Coolest Students

Every now and then I've just got to do a little bragging on my students. I have amazing students in my local classes. Here is a colored pencil drawing created for Debi's granddaughter. It took many many patient hours to create.

My online students at Creative Pencils are no less amazing. How proud I am of them as they bravely move forward through the workshops to build their drawing skills. In the Pencils Series, 101, 201, & 301, the students learn to draw what they see and the basics of shading. They move forward quickly. These shiny vintage aluminum cups were drawn as a part of one of those shading exercises. I love that Justine captured the sheen of the metal.

Several of my Creative Pencils students have been studying their way through a workshop on creating cat portraits in graphite. This is one of the examples of the wonderful work they are producing. Look at those eyes. They look right into your soul. Good job, Sandra.

And now, as promised, today is the day to announce the winner of my drawing from the GYB event held by Vicki of 2 Bags Full. Thank you Vicki for this lovely event. I know you worked many hours to create it. I promised a drawing for a prize on February 1. The prize I offered was an 10" x 8" giclee fine art print of my Dancing Swan drawing. The name chosen through a random drawing was Patty of Patty's Pretty Things. Patty, I will be shipping this Dancing Swan off to you in a few days. I hope you enjoy her.

Oh The Things You Could Draw

Sometimes I wish I had a camera pointed at my face when I open the emails I get from my students. Occasionally they find some of the exercises to be particularly challenging, and I feel their struggle. But when it finally clicks and they begin to make real progress, I celebrate with them and the drawings they send to me bring big smiles to my face.

I have to brag on them sometimes because they are just so very good. I love that they each have their own style and their own interest for drawing subjects. I love that they are each finding their own unique creativity.

Here are some pieces done recently by a few of my students at Creative Pencils. Now, when you look at these and are impressed - and of course, you will be impressed - remember that these students started out as beginners. This is not the level at which they came into class.

Now, doesn't that bring a smile to your face? ....................

Toby

Toby is a Norwegian Forest Cat. They are unusually large and quite smart. Unfortunately, at some point in his life Toby ended up living in a shelter - Felines Inc., located in Chicago. At the shelter Toby met Ingrid, a photographer who sells photographic portraits of cats to raise needed funds for the shelter. Eventually Toby's beautiful portrait was posted in 9livesPhotography on etsy where 50 - 100% of the profits of sales goes to fund either Felines Inc. or Animal Care League, both in Chicago. When I first saw Toby's photo I was captivated by his whole look. He looked almost wild and yet gentle. What I really wanted to do was to drive up to Chicago and adopt him. But since that was impossible, I was so pleased to discover that Toby had been adopted in April of this year. So with Ingrid's permission, I have drawn a graphite pencil portrait of Toby. I will be creating cards and more with this image and 15% of the profit will go to the shelter that helped Toby, Felines Inc. Also, because I find Toby's image so inspiring, I will be using it in more artistic ways in the future. And will always make a donation to his shelter out of the profits from his image.
